Default Driver side morror mounts?

Here is my question for anyone who has install the mirror mounting nuts for 69-72 driver side door. I had to drill out the old mounting nuts that hold the mirror base to the door. I then filled in the holes with fiberglass, sanded, primed and painted the car, Now here is my problem. Was looking today to see how hard it was going to be to install the mounting nuts from the inside of the car door and could tell I was going to have a problem. From the back side I cannot get to the spot where the mirror mount nuts are suppose to go, do to a piece of metal at the top of the door which runs across the whole door. Should I cut a Hole on the back side, which will be hard to do? I am at a lost. Has any on done this?

The bad part is the car has a nice new fresh paint job and I really do not want to screw up.
Any input will help. Thanks  :cry

I have done it, but it is not easy. The easiest way is to use something called a well nut. It is a self setting nut that installs from the outside. Because it is only in the fiberglass, natuarlly it will not take a lot of abuse, but should be OK.
