The time has come, I want new tires . . . the old ones are dry rot and worn unevenly from Bubba. I wanna move up to 255s and I'm seriously considering the Yokohama Avid S/T 255/60/15, but, I'm not sure they'll fit. The car is a 1980, and I know that 255/60s were an option back then, but the physical measurements of the tire seems a little close. My current tires are 245/60/15 and measure ~9.9-10.0 inches across the width. The Yokohama specs say that the Avids are 10.5 inches at the widest. I'm estimating on my car that I've got about 1/4" clearance now in the front and at the park brake bracket in the back. If you do the math, that means rubbing  .
I could just stay at 245, but I like the big tire look. However, I don't want to get stuck with 4 tires that rub. What do you guys think? Am I safe or should I take the conservative route and get different tires? If anyone has 255/60/15 Yokos, could you measure across the width with a caliper?
I put 255/60 VR 15 Pirelli Scorpion Zero's on my '77. They fit fine and I have no rubbing on the front or the back. I had 245's Dunlop's on previously.
I got them from http://www.tirerack.com  They are listed as a Sport Truck tire. When I purchased mine last year they were $85 each plus shipping. The VR rating is good for 149 mph :yesnod:
Well they are not Yoko's but they are BFG's 255/60R15's and they fit fine. No rubbing issues front or back...why not have one fitted there at the shop and test fit it on the car..only way to know for sure..but mine working great, since putting them on recently.

Good idea, I'll start calling around as soon as I get a chance. Maybe I'm just worrying too much. :conehead
