Sorry if this is as stupid as it sounds as I type it :bb
Should the power steering fluid have a dipstick? My steering is making a funny noise. I remove the cap to check the level and it appears the cap it clean, but without a dipstick. CRAP....Now how difficult is it to replace the power steering pump and what is THIS going to cost me :cuss
Just when things are going great another unsuspecting project rears up.
I just replaced mine about two weeks ago. Replacement isn't really that difficult, compared to a lot of stuff on these girls. Plan to get under and on top to remove. I also removed my alternator belt (small block) to get to everything easier. You will need a puller to remove the pully from the pump.
I beleive that I paid about $55.00 for a rebuilt pump.
It has not been established that you need a pump yet. You need to check fluid level which should be covering everything inside the pump & belt tension.
While you should have a dipstick it is easy to have correct level w/o one.
Ganey's correct, I would check the level first. Should have suggested that in the first place.
If you have a salvage yard close, you can likely get a dipstick there. The pump is not a "special" Vette part. My pully was crooked and I got one off of a small block chevy in the local salvage. Ganey may have more info on that.
I bought my rebuilt pump at the local parts s place.
Just a thought...maybe the noise in your power steering unit is being caused by that dipstick you've lost!
That is one of the thing that scares me! What would my issues be if that was the case? Are they metalic? Before I add fluid, I am going to try and fish around with a pair of needle nose to see if I can extract anything and maybe even a magnetic screwdriver. I much appreciate the answers here!
