For the past couple of years I have been having problems with the fuel gauge on my 68. When the tank is full the guage reads as though I have two tanks of gas. The needle just sits at the 3 o'clock position. It will stay there until the tank is about on fumes then go to empty. I have tried checking all of the connections and everything seems to be in order.
Has anyone else had this problem, or know how to fix it?
Had the same problem with my '69. I'll bet ten bucks it is sending unit in the gas tank. They replaced mine after thirty something years and now the gauge is perfect again. Any "good" mechanic can diagnose your problem in about ten minutes or less. The sending unit costs less than $100 and the labor takes about an hour. Your total bill should be between $100-200....or so.
my 76 gauge reads as if it had 2 tanks also, but once it hits 1/4 tank it becomes right. It just started doing this recently and i dont wanna spend much to fix it, so its fine for me for now.
I have the same problem in my 76. It started right after I dopped the tank to fix some leaky fuel lines. As soon as I put the tank back in the the fuel lines were fixed but the gas gauge was off. :mad All I did was trade one problem for another. :p: But I guess it is a 27 year old car. If we didn't like to work on them it wouldn't be a hobby. :yesnod:
