Sorry if this has been asked, I've looked and didn't find anything specific but My clutch doesn't engage at all no click or anything. Could someone give me some steps to follow on my 78 after Fuse check and thermostat switch. I know some of the older ones had an inline fuse, I've been told mine doesn't have that. Any help would be appreciated.
Probly low on freon, Theres a pressure switch somewere in the system,
Don't know if this is on your year, GM had the compressor turn on with the defroster to keep the seals lubricated during the winter, Have you tried checking it this way yet.
1. Inline fuse located in the engine compartment somewhere near the blower fan motor.
2. Possible low pressure situation, pressure switch is mounted to a junction block in refrigerant piping located on the passenger side of the engine compartment
3. If pressure switch is what is holding the compressor off you would probably need to have the system leak tested and repaired by a professional unless you have a vacuum pump, service manifold, etc. to make the repairs.
On my 1980 the pressure switch is located on the accumlator. Can
pull off the wire harness connector and use a paper clip to connect the
two terminals. Start the engine, turn the AC on and see if the compressor
starts. If so, system is low on freon.
If the compressor clutch did not engage when you jumped the pressure switch there is something wrong in the wiring or the controls. It does not indicate that you need freon.
Thanks Kingt, I suppose it could be anything even a bad ground somewhere.
I'll just try to backtrack all my wiring
Yeah, there should be a ground wire running to the compressor. It's also possible that the compressor clutch is bad. If you have a voltmeter you can check to make sure you are getting at least 12volts at the compressor.
