ok i'd like to get the alarm working on my 72. is this a hopeless thought or what? where can i get information on this such. where do i start? thanks :banghead:
I thought I would respond although I am working on a 79. I too am trying to get the alarm working. On mine the arming lock is in the drivers door and is part of the door lock. So far I have had to get a new arming switch and a new(used) tamper switch. That switch is mounted to the retainer clip that holds the door lock cylinder switch in the door if someone trys to pull the door lock out of the door it will set off the alarm if the system is activated. Since the car is at the painters right now I can't do much but it comes home next week so I'll pick up where I left off. Do you have a wire diagram? Do you have an assembly manual? Both of these are valuable tools to have for your car and can help with other issues. When the body man was wet sanding the drivers door my car the alarm started going off so I know the sytem works. Several wires were in the bottom of the door and had been cut of the arming switch. Because the were laying in the water they made connection and set the system off. What have you done to your system so far?
I've never seen anything consolidated on the web for the factory alarm but that's probably because it's all pretty simple stuff. You have the "On/Off" switch (the key lock switch on the rear panel) that sends power to the system. You have the door and hood switches, the relay in the rear storage compartment and then the horn in the right rear quarter panel. It's pretty simple electrical trouble shooting so there's not much voodoo in it. All I can tell you from experience with the system is to turn it on first, open a door and listen for the first relay to trigger and then listen for the flasher relay to cycle. You should be able to hear it clicking on and off. If you don't get that then test the circuit with a multimeter to see if you're getting power. If you are getting power through the system, then it's probably a stuck horn membrane. I've had mine working off and on over the years but since I don't use the alarm system, it's mostly off since you have to exercise the horn rather frequently to keep the horn working.
i don't have power to the rear switch. also i don't have a wiring diagram.(where are they available) i don't know where the 'hot' comes from. do the switches just break a circuit? does it activate the lights as well as the horn or just the hidden horn? thanks
Circut diagrams are availible in the shop manuals. Several of the major part sellers also have them availible as a wall poster which are much easier to read. Since my car is not here I cannot answer the rest of your questions. However I believe that the trip circut is hot to the switches and when a switch is closed it signals the relay and causes it to close setting off the horn and the lights. I'll know more in a week or two.
