I have my 350 engine out of the car and plan on adding the Edelbrock Performer RPM Kit to it. I was wondering since the engine is out of the car, how much more performance would I get out of a 383? Is it worth the extra bucks and work? Any input??
No, 383's were built as "Cheater" motors in the world of dirt track cars and these engines live at 8Krpms. To the eye they look like a 350 but have more torque. These racers balance the crank so you could use a 350 balancer, thus what fooled everyone. Nowdays many just run the larger 400 balancer and be done with it.
A 383 will gain about 30lbs of torque more than a equally built 350 and gain about 25hp in the process. The cheapest kit I've found is here for less than $500 --> http://www.speedomotive.com/Budget%20383.htm
I am kinda suprised the 25HP is all that you might gaine from a 383
Well, if you think about it you only have 9% more cubes. Also, don't take that number as gold. It is very configuration dependent. A 383 will allow a bigger cam w/o sacraficing driveability. Another benefiit of a 383 is the longer stroke allows for more leverage of the piston pushing down on the crank.

Plus the torque curve is broader, just what you want in a street machine.
