Default Engine gurus: need some advice

OK, this is not exactly C3, but you guys are the best. I bought a '70 El Camino SS396 and am trying to decide whether to return it to the dealer or not. When it was first delivered, the engine ran a little rough. I found #8 plug wire was totally off the plug. I put it back on, but no difference - it ran exactly the same with or without the wire. I pulled the plug and the tip was black (I think oil fouled). Replaced the plug and it runs fine now. Question: would running the car without the plug wire cause the plug to foul? Should I check further to see if it might have an oil control problem? Thanks a lot for your help.

It could be oil/fuel fouled, but not carbon fouled if the plug wire was off for the whole time. Just check it again in a week.
