HAD THE CAR ON A LIFT TODAY INSTALLING HEADERS, A 2000 TO 2200 STALL CONVERTOR AND ALSO CHANGING THE RAD FLUID TO THE EVANS NO WATER COOLANT, WHEN I NOTICED THAT WHEN I HOLD THE REAR TIRE AT THE 12 AND 6 O'CLOCK POSITION THERE IS SOME PLAY AT THE WHEEL OR AT THE UNIVERSAL JOINT ON BOTH WHEELS. DO YOU THINK THAT THIS IS NORMAL?? IS THERE SOMETINHG TO TIGHTEN OR DO THEY HAVE TO BE CHANGED
You might be picking up yoke play in the differential in this position. Have someone do this while you look at the 1/2 shaft. Check movement at the 3-9 position to check on bearing play. Although the best way is to check the end play with a dial indicator.
good luck,
Gary
Could be rear wheel bearings. If you are holding teh wheel as described and rocking the tire it sounds like wheel bearings. If you can push teh tire in and out check the rear yokes in the rear housing. If they move in and out the stub shafts in the rear could be worn out. U joints are usually bad if the tire is rotated and you are getting play back and forth. If you have over 50K miles and they have never been done the rear bearings or rear yokes could be bad.
DOEN'T SOUND SO BAD I WILL CHECK THAT TOMORROW. HOW HARD ARE IS IT TO CHANGE THESE BEARINGS ? ANY ADVISE. MAYBE I SHOULD GET SOME "VETTE BRAKES" PARTS AND REALY GO CRAZY :smash:
Rear bearings are a real PITA to deal with at home, without the specific tools. I've done just about everything on my car, from suspension rebuilds, tranmission swaps to engine swaps, and I wouldn't attempt to do this job myself. But then again, since I've never done it, I might be over estimating the difficulty of the job.
