The wiring harness that connects to the A/C compressor also has a second connector running down the right fender that I do not know where it belongs. Anybody out there with 1980 that can tell me what it is for ?
I will look at the colors when I get home as well. But it has a connector on it and "Y"s from harness, one branch to A/C compressor, other branch to NOTHING. Nice ride by the way!
Theres a solenoid on your carbeurator, when A/C is energized (settings on your dash) this solenoid pulls in. It pushes against the throttle to bring revs up a little since the A/C is drawing off the crank. Maybe that's your missing connection.
According to my 1980 wiring diagram, it looks like it goes to the "engine temperature switch". Don't ask me what it does . . . I've got the same set of blue and black wires dangling loose in my right fender. My AC was ripped out by the last owner so I'm not sure what gets connected to what. :(

Re: 1980 Wire harness (80Xflags)

My A/C system is complete and I have those wires dangling. The only thing that I could think of was that I do think that the L-82's had an additional electric fan in front of the belt driven fan. I wonder if that was the connection for that fan?
Any 1980 L-82's with A/C out there that can verify this ?
If that's the case, then I bet you had an electric fan mounted to your radiator origionally. It would connect to the pass side temp switch in the head.
Ok, I broke out the old assembly manual, and surprisingly, I can actually make some sense of it  . I found a picture with what I believe to be the connectors in question. There's a pair of connectors bundled together in the right fender area, one goes to the AC compressor and the other has a note by it that says "L82 *NOTE* Remove connector from tear tape". If I trace the wires on the wiring diagram from the "engine temperature switch" they do in fact go to a radiator fan labeled "AUX FAN RPO L82". And according to the assembly manual, the "engine temperature switch" is located in the front of the right head as already mentioned. So I'm assuming that one end of the blue/black wire connector goes to the engine temperature switch and the other end to the auxiliary cooling fan on the L82 model.

So the end that we see is the fan end and the temp sensor end is burried further up the wiring loom. Maybe I will yank the whole works some day. Might save me all of 1/2 lb. According to the ricers that would be like 15 HP.
I have the wiring but not the fan or switch - does this suggest to any one that i should have the electric fan, even though mine's an L48, or is it more likely that the same wiring loom is used regardless of whether you have the electric fan or not?
Just wondered if my car came with another option i didn't know about, which would be quite nice. (Even if it has obviously been pulled out!)
What do we reckon?

I'm guessing GM just used the same wiring harness for all cars in a particular year. And if you ordered an L82, they just hooked the fan and temp sensor into the harness. I suppose if you want, you could wire in your own setup.
