Dath - I had Mark include a 400 flywheel. In fact, I'm wondering if it's the flywheel that's causing my vibration problems right now. It vibrates/shakes even in neutral around 1200-3300 rpms. Mark thinks it could either be the poly motor mounts just transfering the vibration straight to the frame or that I installed the flywheel on wrong. I can't imagine I installed it wrong, it looked like it could only go on one way.
Did you also install a poly trans mount to go with the poly motor mounts? I've heard that you shouldn't run poly motor mounts without a poly trans mount as well, perhaps that could cause vibration issues as well? Of course if it vibrates in neutral, maybe the trans mount has nothing to do with it...

As for the balancer and pulleys: I bought another water pump from a speed shop in town and the pulley mounting wheel was a little further in (which helped) so I left it at that. It's hard to tell but they are still off a little but not very much.....heck, I wonder if that could cause vibrations???? I'm running one pulley around water pump, crank, and alt. and the other between crank and water pump.
So is a short or long style pump needed? I haven't managed to figure out which I need, but was guessing short... I wouldn't think that pulley misalignment would cause vibration issues, but then again...

MJ & Others: Yep, it's going to be lots of fun! I need to get that bag off and drop her in. Only problem is that I *INTEND* to clean up the engine compartment and a few other things before hand, but I'm so excited I don't want to wait!

No, I'm running both poly motor and trans mounts.
You still need the short water pump.

Sure hope you have better luck with your AR engine than the one that's sitting shelled out in my driveway right now...

As long as your motor mounts are more rigid than your trans mount you can mix and match. I am running one poly and one rubber mount for the eng and rubber for the trans. You don't want your eng rotating more than trans mount will. I had only tore the driver side motor mount and wanted to see experiment with mixing them to gain a stonger driver side mount, which tends to be the one that tears from torq, and still have the vib absorbing rubber on the passenger side. The eng hardly moves compared to having rubber/rubber up front but I can feel no diff in in vibration.

Yes, yes, please expand??? I have heard nothing but good reports, even for the couple of people who had issues, one was minor and both were promptly resolved.

There is only one way it can go on.

You still need the short water pump.
You need a short water pump with a 3/4 inch shaft. ONLY the C3's and some trucks ran a short pump with a 3/4 inch shaft. If you get one with a 5/8" shaft you will have to change your water pump pulleys. And it will confuse the next owner as to why the bubba owner before him put on the wrong water pump :D

EDIT: You had some questions about pulleys since you said the balancer looked bigger. It may be bigger diameter, but the mounting location for the front pulley should be the same distance from the front of the block as your old engine. I think all balancers have the same width, but may vary from 6 1/2 to 8 inches in diameter.

I'll be tearing down and repairing one of their engines in a few weeks. I may be posting some results based on what I find.

What was the problem with the engine???
I got specific instructions with my engine what I could to with it and what not.. They told me where to set the rev limiter and NOT to run Nitrous because the engine wasn't built for nitrous. I drove over 8000 miles with the engine and made over 40 Drag Strip passes with it.. and mine still runs as good as on the first day...

That's what Mark claims but I think just about all of us have noticed that the balancer he is using seems to be thinner so that the water pump pulley is sticking out about 1/8" further. Barry (bgrice) also noted this and put some washers to take the crank pulley out further but I've been heavily recommended against doing that.

LARS - Wow, I too would like to know what happened to the AR motor you have.

we'll have to wait and see what Lars finds out. The engine may have been abused, or it might be one of those freak failures.

That can happen even to the best engine builders...
It's also critical that the engines are operated the way they were meant to be operated.. Timing, rev limiter setup etc...

Cool, that was my next question, 3/4, or 5/8 :D I'm thinking that the aluminum one from Weiand looks to be good and reasonably priced: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...t=8890&from=MG

Cool, sounds like I just need to get a water pump, some header gaskets, a flexplate, a dual feed fuel line, and some fuel hose (just for a temporary hookup until I plumb in a hard line) and I should be in business:D

Any particular brand flexplate? I think I need to get an externally balanced 400 168 tooth flexplate... SFI

dath,

Plan on a couple of miseries making the transition to the new engine. Ten bucks says a *vette* waterpump will not give you the correct spacing with the AR aftermarket harmonic balancer you have when you put the pulleys on. They offer high performance engines... not vette specific engines.

By the way.... take the time to get the numbers off of the back of the block to see what year you have. It might help with other parts you might need. AR put together a 355 for me with a '72 Z-28 block and there are a few differences between it and the stock '74 vette block as to where the oil pressure sensor & water temp sensor now fit.
