What part of the side vents on a '70 - '72 were chrome? Was it just the horizontal outer edges? I have '70 convertible that was repainted before I bought it and they painted over the chrome edges on the side vents. I chipped a little section of the paint off to see if the chrome was still there and it was (it was on one of the horizontal edges). But, I was afraid to chip anymore off if the chrome doesn't go on all edges.
i don't recall the exact details, but i do remember each year was different. my reference is the 68-72 Vette Vues fact book.
the paint on my side vents is also chipped and peeling a bit. i want to get them properly repainted. how hard is it to mask the ribs and match the color?
You could mask the edges with pinstiping or fine line tape.....but I just painted the whole vent and carefully wiped the paint from the edge with a thinner dampened rag......
On the 70's only the horizontal showed chrome. On 71 and 72 both horizontal and vertical were chrome. If you look closely at original vents you will see that the 70 was made slightly different then the 71/72. The 70 did not have raised edges on the vertical part of the vents like it did on the horizontal. The 71 and 72 did have a raised edge on both vertical and horizontal.
When I had my car repainted, I wasn't sure what the original paint on the grill was supposed to look like. Neither did the body shop, apparently, because he painted them flat black, and I thought he painted all of the edges silver. Maybe he just stripped off the repaint and noticed that the edges were silver and kept them that way.
On my 71', the horizontal and vertical faces are chrome and the rest is body color. I believe it is the same as the grill treatment except body color instead of black.
