Default carpet

Is it possible to go to a carpet store and then cut the carpet to fit the car. I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible. A bottle of brake fluid opened up and spilt in the car. I figure it will be cheaper than the premolded carpet. I think I rember someone on the forum redoing there 1978+ rear section by cutting it themselves, I could be wrong though. Thanks for the helpl.

I dont know the answer, but if you get this to work, let me know. I have seen replacement carpet at PepBoys for alot cheaper than Corvette carpet, but didnt know if it would work. Are you replacing the front, the back, or both? Please keep me posted if you would. Right now, I have no carpet at all. I tore it out because it really looked bad, and I had to fix a hole in the floor. :D

I was thinking of going to a carpet place that woudl normally sell carpet for houses. I plan on replacing all of the carpet inside. My master plan is to change the interior from silver carpet and oyster seats to black. I'll keep u posted on how it goes.

I have just replaced the carpet in my 1981 and I used used the premolded carpet set and all I can say is that it went a dream and looks fantastic. I don't think you would get such a good fit and finish using standard carpet. Just my 2cents worth.

When I bought my car, it had thick-pile **** home carpeting in it.
Not a bad job, but it was as ugly as the baby blue exterior paint!

Since I don't know what kind of cost the house carpet might run ya, I can't tell you if it will be cheaper. I recently purchase new carpet (complete set) for my '80 and paid $197 + shipping from Wilcox. I compared other carpet suppliers and that was the best price I could find at that time. It went in fairly easily (be patient!). Good luck in your endeavor.

Alwyn went to a luxury restoration shop I think and bought bulk carpet from them and piced it in. His pics look great and his carpet loks new, not like the dated carpet you can buy. I'm going to look into the same plan.

This is the black carpet I found and you can see that it has little rows going through it. But I'll be looking for something else. It was .65 sq foot.

Let me tell you I put an ACC kit in a 70 Corvette and it had me pisssssssssed off I could only Imagine trying to make a flat piece of carpet fit. I would bite the bullet and buy molded carpet. :smash: :smash:

When I got my vette the previous Bubba had put inch high shagpile with real underlay in the passenger compartment. Keeps you nice and warm (and you really need that in a vette  ) and looks just..........like a piece of house carpet where a piece of auto carpet should be. :D
I'd say go with the real deal, but thats cause I dont think anything else looks right if you know what I mean.

BTW PaulD where did you get yours from and how much was it? Ive still got to put mine right. Although the cat will be upset as he likes to nap in the footwell as its so comfy :yesnod:

Yes, i've done it!

I got sick of trying to dry out my original moulded carpets whenever my car leaked (they eventually rotted away)

I decided to make a set (front only) with removeable footwell mats, so i could easily dry them out. Saying that, after putting all that effort into making carpets, i made sure i stopped the leaks!!

I used 'car' carpet, from a trim supplier (http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk .. uk supplier, but will give you an idea whats available)

there are 3 layers ..underfelt/ heat barrier/ carpet and apart from the footwell mats, the rest of the carpets are stuck in, like a normal 'old fashioned' car carpets.

I'm quite pleased, as i think they turned out pretty good

:D

i'm not sure how difficult it would be to do the rear.. i certainly couldn't do it one piece like the original... but i'm sure it could be done, if you have the time and the patience.

...... though i might just be easier in the long run to save up for a set of moulded carpets

I've tried this - althuogh not on a Vette. It was a sever pain in the buttocks! Not to duscourage you bro, but bit the bullet and get the premolded carpet. You'll never, ever be able to get flat carpet to lay down like original, and it'll never look finished. Just my $.02 :leaving:

Screw house carpet. Once I've got the floor pan and other parts treated (heat and noise), I've got a WHOLE lot of web addys that sell auto carpet and upholstery. I've choosen a nice Mercedes deep pyle thus far. Check your local phone book for auto upholstery!

I just replace the carpet in my 79 L-82. I got a set of premolded from The Last Detail. I was one of the best and cheapest places I had found for carpet.
$122.00 for a front set. http://www.tld-corvette.com Give em a look. They were really nice and shipped it right out to me.
