Default ignition switch? HELP

Hey all! New to this forum--anyways. I have a 69 vette w/msd 6A ignition. Car will start but as soon as release key(to run position) car dies(Also-note car had began to shut down completely while driving this past year--but always restarted until now when it got me stuck and no start. I used a volt meter until I discovered no 12v from little red wire to msd box when key is turned to run position. I checked this by temporarly applying 12v directly from the battery to this wire and car ran. :hurray: This red wire(from msd) connects to the ignition switch wire--I think. The wire I follow under hood dissappears in a harness . I tried locating it under dash-no luck! Do you think its the ignition switch? If so where is that darn switch? Is there any way to do any tests without removing it( to see if its the switch or break in wire)? Thanx for any help.

the ignition switch is on the steering column on the pointing towards the right side of the car, it should be white? with a big black harness coming out of it, there is a rod that slides in it that the lock cylinder moves down the steering column to actuate.

you can find the wire there, also, there should be two fused links out on the starter next to the battery cable, you could also check those and see if they are blown. if they are, you should check the problem out before just trying it without link, msd is expensive.
hope this helps!

Why don't you use the jumpers that came with the msd for the coil to by pass
the msd box,
This way will determine if you have an ignition problem,

The red wire goes to ignition switch, This does not necessarly mean it was hooked up there if you did not install it,

I would just run a new wire to a switched 12 volt source,

And welcome to the forum, I'm new here to and enjoy this sight very much,
Alot to be learned here.

Thanx for the quick responses guys--this forum is sweet. I've thought of connecting it to another 12v switched--but where? And should it be fused-not fused, I don't want to get stuck. I've thought of running a wire directly from the battery(+) with a toggle as a switch--but that setup sounds cheesy to start a car and if left on might drain battery. Regarding fusible links at starter--it sounds as if car would not start at all if they were blown--or am I wrong. Like I said--I have had the car running when I apply 12v to red wire. Some how I'm not getting 12v power to this wire---electrical problems suuuccckk!

Check the fuse box, Should be a spot marked ign, Just make sure you check it whith a test light or volt meter that it is a switched source,

You were right--found ign on fuse box--but no power--also tried bat, lps(think thats what it read)also no power switched or not. The only one that worked was acc and it is switched but thats where I hooked up my radio power.
