My 68 vert's driver side door quit opening. Upon inspecting both the working passenger doors lock/opening operation I believe the following.
Some piece broke off the outside door open button mechanism and it is now completely non functional. I can successfully (I think) lock and unlock the door. The inside door handle works all the way to the latch, but I think the last part that actually releases the door is not functioning. Any ideas on how to get this door open so I can get to the parts that need replacing? HELP!
When my door wouldn't open I used a long screw driver (with the window down) to manually move the locking mechanism and open the door. I had thought that somthing in my door was broke also but after a good cleaning everything worked good as new.
Do you mean the actual LOCK or the LATCH. I can get the LOCK mechanism to go up and down so I believe it is functioning. I can see the piece missing from the outside button that would open the latch. I look at the passenger side, operate the button and note the mechanism, then go to drivers side and see that mechnism is not complete.
Next I observe the passenger side door mechnism while operating the inside latch. I go the drivers side and note that there should be a hook like thing grabbing a small cable to release the latch. It appears that the hook broke off. Wheres the incredible hulk when you need him?
Thanks 77 dream for your ideas, any others out there?
72, yea I been poking at it for a while with a coat hanger and got all kinds of stuff to move, just not the right part yet. I am pretty sure that I got the inside door handle mechanism working, but since the hook is off the cable (right at the latch) I won't be able to get it to work (unless I find a 12" set of really thin needle nose plyers to crab the cable. I will try working on the outside button mechanism more to see if I can get the right stuff to move. Unfortunately, by looking at the passenger side in motion, the mechnism is REALLY buried in the door.
So I have been messing with this door for at least a couple of hours. A buddy comes over, looks at the passenger side a couple of times, grabs a screwdriver, sticks almost straigt down by the window and POP. The door opens. Took him like 3 minutes.
Ok now to take the skin off and see what needs replacing.
Gladyou got it. Check the little clips that hold the rods. It may just need a good cleaning to get rid of the dried old grease. Use white lithium to re do it.
Good luck. :seeya
