Default Confused about sidepipe headers

I just got off the phone with Summit about the Hedman side exhaust headers(part number HED-68280). The guy said they wont work on my '77 because my car didn't come with factory side exhaust. I was planning on hooking up my own custom sidepipes. Will that work? Or do I need to get a different set of headers? Has anyone used these and if so did you get the uncoated or coated? The plain black finish supposedly just burns off the header when you put it on your car. What is the finish under the black after it burns off? I'm greatly confused. Looks like this is a little setback in my sidepipe plans. :banghead: :banghead:

Hummm, these headers look like standard under car exhaust headers:

The side exhaust headers come down and then make a hard turn towards the outside of the car so the pipe can exit behind the front wheel.

Are these what you are wanting?

Here are the Hooker sidepipe headers:

I believe the header/sidepipes on my car are hooker headers :auto:

The picture is the same for every Hedman header on Summit. I remember seeing someone with the factory side exhaust headers on here. I remember them making a hard turn facing out but the collector never was actually seen on the side of the car. It always was under the car still.

Groovyjay, I'm jealous! Those Stahl headers are the coolest thing and on my list of 'things to save for'! The Heddmans are not as effective (not equal length and smaller tube), but are less expensive and should work, I would think. However the ones pictured above are NOT what you want for side pipes.

The Hedman sidepipe headers will work for any '63-82 Corvette with factory-style side pipes. You need to cut the factory side pipe and weld on a flange- then you're in business.

So what I was thinking of doing was to get an exhaust shop to bend me some 3inch black pipe and weld a Moroso spiral muffler in the middle of two pieces of pipe and bolt it up to my header and a frame. Sound like a good plan? Does anybody know about the finish burning off? :smash:

Here is a picture of the Heddman side exhaust headers on my 74 engine before it was installed. They are hot coated.

No they will NOT work with a Big Block! Small block only.

Remember, the headers do not exit at 90 degrees from the engine! They point back some.

I've got side outlet Stahl headers on my 502. Fabricated 3" pipes with two Moroso spiral flows per side to go under fiberglass 69 style covers (had to widen the covers by 1"). I built them with dumps where they turn back on the sides, but have re-thought that and am removing the dumps. Stahl's are expensive but supposedly the best header on the market. Couldn't prove it by me.
