Default Backup lights always on.
Sound like a switch going paws-up? How tough is that to replace?

Sounds more like the rod between the switch and shift linkage came off. It is held on with tiny clips. If the rod is intact, disconnect it and move the switch lever back and forth. If the backup lights can be turned on and off by moving the switch lever, the switch is OK. If the problem is neither of these, the switch may need adjustment. The mounting bracket is slotted to allow for minor adjustments in travel.
