I currently own a 2002 -Z06> I've been looking for a project car between the years of 1969 and 1972 big block. I may have the possibility to buy a 72 coupe 454 with 4 speed (original motor from factory) a/c car. Car is a basket case and needs to be totally restored inside and out. Missing front bumper. Body is good no past accidents side pipes are rusted threw. Car has been sitting quite a long time. Don't know yet what the owner wants for it I'll find out next week. I'm assuming that the motor needs complete overhaul as well as the transmission. For me, because im a maniac everything has to be changed. Is it worth it to redo this car or go buy one that does not need that much work. Can someone estimate what this car would cost to restore back to factory specs since I have no idea what it will cost to redo it and if parts availability are easy to come by. Thanks for your input.
It is ALWAYS cheaper to buy one that is already done. Go with a basket case only if you enjoy the work and want it to spend you time on. (Cheaper then a shrink :D )
Offer him one to two grand. You can always part it out if necessary :(
I think any experienced people here would probably tell you, "If you're going to buy a Shark, then buy the very best one you can afford." There'll will still be plenty to be done to it to keep you occupied and I guarantee that it'll be cheaper in the long run. I didn't buy the best I could afford, and I'd be ashamed to tell you what I've got in it now.
If there is visible rust, you should also beware of frame rust. Check the areas where the trailing arms connect to the frame, as well as the upper windshield frame.
Regardless, this car will be a money pit. Do it only if you can afford it and like to do this kind of stuff for fun.
