Ok, so even a vetern of hot rodding makes a mistake from time to time.... it's 2am.. My 13yr old son and I installed my new billet Mallary Unilite w/mech tach drive, Highfire VI box, and all looks good... It's late, so I decide to fire it up the next day after work.... Next day I get home, excited to get the new ignition running... turn the key and BOOOOOOOM!!! HUGE BANG!!
I look under the car and the drivers muffler is shredded like a pop can! :banghead:
It turns out my son, whom I was teaching bumped the engine over once too many while I was in the bathroom, and figured so long as he got the marker back, all was ok.. the timing was 180 out!!
Soooo.. now I get to decide....
1) Flowmaster 40's
2) Hooker side pipes - Coated headers/tubes
3) Custom side pipes - polished stainless headers and tubes
I had the Flowmasters on my car 1st (I love their sound). I have also always loved the looks of sidepipes on C3's & was very fortunate to have a set of Hooker Headers/ Sidepipes donated to me from a fellow forum member.
A big plus with sidepipes is the fact that it's much easier to do transmission/ suspension work without having to work around the exhaust system. Also doesn't lose ground clearance to the exhaust running under the car. If you have a fiberglass rear leafspring, you also have to be careful to how close your pipes are to it ;) . If you have an interior heat problem, sidepipes won't contribute to the problem like the hot exhaust running under your car :)
The disadvantage to sidepipes is the extreme heat so watch your legs ;).
Ok... in the name of time... I want to drive the car to the cruise-in tonight in Dayton... plus there is a big cruise-in in Miamisburg on next Sat... I went with the Flowmaster 40's for now. Undercarriage Wharehouse had them for $67.50 each! It won't take me anytime to put them on, and be on the road again!! :hurray:
I'm working with a shop that builds custom stainless exhaust systems to possibly make up a set of full polished stainless header sidepipes, similar to the Hookers, and use the spiral baffles inside.
