Default slow headlights..

my buddy just bought a 77 vette. What would cause the headlights to operate extremely slow? When he turns them off they dont respond immediately.....especially the passenger side....the lights shut off right away but it takes about 45 seconds for the light to respond and go down. Any ideas?

It sounds like vacuum leak. Here are a couple of links to help out with the vacuum. The first one covers up to a '72 but I think they are all pretty much the same. It will at least give you an idea of where to look.

A couple more for your reference:

Pretty common issue - this is one of my upcoming winter projects.

Most common problem is that the seals are bad in the acturators. This is a simple fix to replace.

:iagree:

I found a leak coming from the wiper actuator (passenger side near firewall). I pulled back the rubber boot and had to re-attach the rubber seal under there.

Headlights/Wipers can be frustrating. Good Luck.

I concur with the others. If you don't find any leaks and the the actuators are good then it's the relays. I had the same problem. I would have to rev the engine to get the lights to open or close. I checked everything and fixed T connectors and check valves until I had no leaks. Finally I replaced the relays and now the lights work awesome. When I turn them on they snap open in about 3 seconds.
