I believe the x-pipe works as sort of a second scavenger to keep the exhaust velocity up while the h-pipe is more a balancer to reducing back pressure. The x-pipe as been shown to increase both hp and torq better than the h-pipe but you might not feel the diff since it is not huge. Either is better than running straight duals.

I think either will get the job done for you. given the space restrictions on these cars I think packaging is the more important consideration. I would talk with whatever shop you are going to use and get their opinion. I have an H pipe on my small block 74 and I can remove the H and go back to stock without changing anything but the manifolds and using my old pipes. Here's a pic.

Nice job on the H pipe. Looks great. The shop is suggesting the X pipe but Im not sure there is room for it. Im leaning toward the H pipe instead.

There is plenty of room, tho it can make getting the driveshaft out tricky.

Check my website for a pic. Benefit is mellower sound and more torque across the entire power band. Proven many times by all the magazines.

Ditto 71Roadster on the difference in sound. dB level will go down and sound will go up an octave or two. Much less resonance.
