I am in the process of istalling my shiftconsole and shift plate in my 69. I have purchase a new shift console for my car. My question is, when i went to screw my shifter plate to the new console I noticed the holes in the new console are large. Now how do I get the screws to hold to anything. The screws are a #8 for the installation but they have nothing to grab on to. I tried to put some J nut on the console but the lips on the colsole will not allow the j nut to reach the holes. Has anyone run into the before and if so what did you do to correct the problem. Thanks!
Same problem here also.
I took a piece of sheet metal and cut it to fit the opening in the console. I then cut the center out leaving just enough around the edges to support the fragile edges and tabs of the console. Some trial and fit here. I put two pop rivets in the back and one small screw in the front to hold it against the underside of the console. I then drilled and tapped the holes where the four shifter plate screws attach. I now have a very solid console and everything is hidden under the shifter plate.
My tabs where busted off on my orig console so I used a piece of wood to screw into until I replace the console. You might try those metal clips that slide on a flat surface if your tabs are still there but the holes are too large.
I just had the same problem with my 68, I could not get the tinnerman nuts to fit right, what I used was the plastic inserts that you push through the holes and then you can put your screws in them. this is the same thing that is used in most car bumpers now to screw the licence plates on, a good parts store will have all different shapes and sizes ( make sure you support the console plastic when you push them in so as not to snap it off, it should be a tight fit)
