I can barely hear my stock radio.... but I don't want to touch it, or the dash. I figured I would put something together and throw it behind the seats. I was going to make my own speaker box but when I saw this thing at Pep Boys for $29 including speakers i went for it! :) The head unit was not the cheapest model because I need a remote control to use it. Went for a test drive today and it works great! :) The CD didnt skip at all. Only problem is i dont really want to listen to music; would rather listen to the engine! :) Also, with the top down the top and lid obstruct the line of sight to the head unit so the remote doesnt work as well as I would like. I may just move the whole thing forward. The wiring harness unplugs from the back and I can just lift the entire thing out of the car.
OK, I was going to title this topic, "BUBBA does stereo" but I didnt think it was BUBBA enuf to qualify! The head unit bracket is screwed into the top of the box - no duct tape, yet!
I do not want to molest my stock appearing dash, ok? I probably have at least 500 points (out of a possible 4500) in this car and don't want to deviate from stock! :)
Yes, pep boys!! $29.99!! Can't beat that with a stick! I actually changed one of the speakers because I had 1 lying around. I have headers and flowmaster 50s so the exhaust note does compete with the music. :)
I have been debating cutting (or not cutting) the dash myself. I would like a good stereo in there, but the car is all original other than some performance goodies under the hood. I even bought the plate from American International to do a clean job, but have not had the heart to butcher her yet......and it's been over a year  I am seriously considering something like that. I would change all speakers ( two 6", two 4" and two tweeters) and put a nice mp3 changer where the jack goes. I am actually trying to find a hard wire remote, so I don't have to point towards the back....
Good job....and can't go wrong with that price....
I love music, but I haven't spent a dime on tunes for the 71, its just not the right car for that. It can be heard a 1/4 mile away, but its not music you hear. ;)

:nonod: Molesting a stock dash?? All you have to do is remove the original bezel and the old radio. buy one that has been pre cut(some of the vendors sell them) and place it in the dash with the stereo...That way you have the factory bezel and factory radio if you want to put it back in
dude, thats a slick setup... i'm looking at something semi-similar in my 77.... not mounting the tuner in the back, but i'm gonna cut a piece of plywood that is the same shape of the back area and carpet it so it is a interference fit. Then i am going to mount my 12 disk changer and a pair of 6x9's in boxes to the panel... that way i dont have to worry about cutting or drilling , enhancing the chance of leaks..and no mods to the original structure..
Those boxes always scare me. Have you anchored it to the floor? It wouldn't be the first time someone crashes and dies, not of the crash but because they got hit in the head by XXX lbs worth of stero stuff.
I have a similar setup in my '72, but my radio has no wireless remote. I gottta reach back to change the tunes & volume. I'd like to get a stereo with a remote and I'm just curious as to how your remote works? Is it wireless, do you have to have direct line of sight to tune/adjust the stereo with the remote? Or do you have a wired remote? What kinda stereo you got? Thanks!

I got a SONY 502 (not quite sure of model #, I can check). It has wireless remote. When I put the soft-top down and the lid down it blocks the head unit which is on top of the speaker box. (That is easily seen in the second pic- or rather, you can't see the head unit!) The wireless remote seems to require line of site, so I had to reach around and back with my right arm and press the button multiple times to make anything happen.... definitely NOT a good idea. I will try sliding the whole box forward (no, it is not bolted down). That should help. Eventually I may have to relocate the head unit. The entire setup is Mickey Mouse enuf to retain total flexibility! MJ
This cost about $100 though...I was thinking I could keep this remote up front and attach it with some velcro...keep everything else in back...sounds real Bubba like, but a good alternative to cutting up the dash...

Now.... that's a great line! Only someone brilliant could come up with that logic.
:iagree:
I like it. Really simple and like the idea of being able to take it out when you don't want it sitting in your car. Wonder if Crappy Tire (aka Canadian Tire) has the same type of thing? I think you need quite a bit of volume, because of loud exhaust. I don't want to monkey around with my dash either and prefer to keep the stock radio and have the unit like Mark has.
