Re: Which torque converter should I use?? (Crickett)
385/TH350 with 3.08s in the rear.
I am 425 with same gears and like my TCI Breakaway. Mine is anti-balooning for NOS but I won't use it that way.
The stock converter was terrible it wanted to tug the car off the line and I had to continually shift into neutral at lights. This one is acceptable and plenty of torque off the line without slipping around noticably.
I would not go with a lower stall speed from what little I know, but you should talk to the tech's. they reccommended this based on cam specs and other factors.
Re: Which torque converter should I use?? (Glutamine83)
i have a 355 with a big cam and I run a 2400 stall, which seems to have decent driveability/performance
i would really like a 2800-3000 stall :seeya
I've also got a 2400 stall, but I don't know how it works yet as I haven't driven my car since installing it... I had my converter custom made by Torco for a very reasonable rate and it *SHOULD* be better than an off the shelf converter as it's only 9.5 inches. Smaller is better:D I think they cut the stators on the higher stall speed converters with larger cases, which produces a less efficient converter. I've also got an antiballoon plate and the converter is made from billet steel. I do plan on using nitrous or I wouldn't have bothered with the antiballoon myself. Also, with a 2400 and stock tire sizes, you will be very marginal with the 3.08 rear on the highway. Really you shouldn't go any higher unless it's a drag only car, which with 3.08 I'm sure it's not... You'll want to run a transmission cooler as well, or at least every company I called recommended it and my TH400 book recommends it for nearly any car in any setup...
Re: Which torque converter should I use?? (Jack71)
I went with a 1800 stall in my 78 with a stroked 388ci motor and 700R4 overdrive transmission with a lock up converter. I have 3:55 gears in the back...With the amount of torque I will be making, I believe it will stall around 2100 rpms anyway which is dead in my torque power band. I should enjoy it when I finish the vette and get it on the road.....
