does the following sound possible,
snip the wires at the headlights for main beam, stick a relay in there and activate it with the rear defogger switch????

I think the headlight switch on a Corvette also controls the vacuum that raises and lowers the headlight doors. If you get rid of this switch you may have to find another way to control the doors.

Just replace the dimmer switch if it's bad.
I changed mine (which was working fine) to the floor switch.

Sure you can trigger it off of a switch/relay arrangement or a floor switch.

Looking at the schematic on your 77 the dimmer switch has three wires on it. A light blue that comes from the main light switch, a light green that goes to the high beams and a tan that goes to the low beams. I think this switch is your problem. If you want to route around it you will need to cut the green and tan wires and insert a switch or a relay to toggle between them. If possible use the blue wire from the main switch for a source for the switch or relay.

I believe these wires can be found on the bottom of the column on the left side.
