The ram air induction on the 79 and later sharks is about the closest to cold air induction.
 Curious why are you saying just 79 and later? All have had cold air intake over the radiator since they went away from cowl induction after '75.

The DUAL setup started in '79 yes (actually I'm not sure what '78 had) but '76 and '77 have single snorkels, ducted to the front (basically the later one without the second side intake) I've been tossing around the idea of running something down to the nose, but not sure about picking up water. (rocks could be blocked with wire mesh) As it is now it may be ideal, I am going to open up the front of the intake area to hopefully scoop up more of the air that doesn't go to the radiator. It would be nice to have a better idea how the air flows in there...

The setup to which you are referring was first available on 1978 L-82 equipped cars, while the L-48 cars had the single snorkle arrangement - in 79 both engines got the dual snorkle setup.

As a cold air system it works ok - there is no ram effect of course but it should be quite effective in getting lower temp air into the intake tract - if you block off the hot air hoses into the underside of each snorkle you will increase the cold air effect.

I emailed these guys awhile back, they don't have a complete solution, but the boxes themselves should be a good start:

http://www.ramairbox.com
Another issue with those is that the 14" x 3" models will not clear a HEI without modification. Trust me--I've talked with them about it. No point in spending money on something that will have to be Bubba-ed up right out of the box. I think a functional cowl hood is still the most sanitary solution.

Here is what I am invisioning for my 73. they make filters that fit under the stack. I figure some 5 inch stacks poking out of the hood. would make a devil of a sweet ride. http://www.carbs.net/weber/wildv8.asp

Gonna put on of them on a ZZ502 or a motown 427. Both would cost me 10 grand and net me 500+ hp.

I experimented with this quite a bit before switching to tpi.

The only way I could get cold air to the carb air cleaner was to remove the foam seal on the top of the radiator frame and fab some ducts back to a dual snorkle air cleaner. I used some ducts from a Camaro that transition from a flat, narrow profile to a round. From there I used round flex to attach to the snorkles.

I measured air temps in free air and in the air cleaner and they were the same..

I think I got a little ram air at speed but no way to measure it.

It may be possible to pick up cooler air from the wheel well.

GrandSportC3...
I have a Ram-Air-Box system that I may or may not install on the 8T1 Bionic Vette.
I tried it out and the air ducts rubbed on the fan belt and the A/C belt....Had it hooked up to the turbo intakes in the engine hood.
Works very well in keeping the underhood temps down...including the engine temps. Also appeared top end performance was very healthy.
Engine shake caused the ducts to drop down into the belts....so I ditched the idea unitl I can maybe install solid fiberglass ducts over the belts then flex duct into the box.

I already bought all materials needed for the setup... I'm thinking in building the setup this weekend... I will try to get the air from the windshield area...

I was going to suggest trying to tap into the upper firewall area if theres room. Might have to move a few things. But that way you could draw air in that cowl area and bassically get the same effect of the higher pressure air afforded to the factory cowl setups.

Lowe's has a extensive cold air intake selection in the home furnace duct aisle:

This is what i did with my Hi Rise hood.I installed a piece of Alu sheetmetal and cut a hole for the filter. The main part of the air is drawn from the cowl..

He's a little shy and hiding inside:

I think I lost some upper end since it falls off at about 5000 instead of the 5500 it used to, must be too much restriction but it works well for low rpm's and cruising. I am going to the track in Sept and will run it with and without the duct work. Check out the thread link for a little more info.

I didin't even see the link! That's pretty much the same thing I'm going to do with the Vette. I was going to have someone build it out of aluminum for me so the top would screw off so I could access the filter, but your Lowes job looks pretty good :).

One problem I have is the serp belt is very close the duct work so I had to dent it in underneath, not shown in my pics. Going to take your advise and get to one of those dyno tuning center and I will try it with and without the duct work.

I realize you probly don't want to harm your tilt front end nor would I, but if it was a mostly a track only car, you could just cut a hole and run a foreward facing scoop... or bond an L-88 scoop/airbox onto your front end. Like this one from ecklers:

I like the way those look anyway... then you'd have a tilt L-88 setup...

I won't modify the tilt front.. I should get enough flow through the cowl of current hood... It's only 19 x 1 inch .. but that should be enough...
