My Gen light is always ons. When I start the car the voltage meter reads about 11-11.5. When I give it some gas the meter goes to 14-14.5. Recently the car stalls occasionally when I come to a stop after it has been running for a while. Can someone please help me with this.
Had that exact problem, found it to actually be that the fuse box had come loose from the floor board therefore not grounding out the circuit. Check to ensure that the fuse box is in tact and good condition and then check all of the wiring to and from.
The following is from the GM Training manual and Chassis Service manual:
SWITCH OFF, LAMP ON: Disconnect (unplug) the two leads at the alternator #1 & #2. If the lamp stays on, there is a short between these two leads. If lamp goes out, replace rectifier bridge in alternator.
SWITCH ON, LAMP ON. ENGINE RUNNING: Check for a blown fuse where used between indicator lamp and switch or an under charged battery.
UNDERCHARGED BATTERY: Accessories left on to long, drive belt slipping, bad battery, wiring defects. With ignition switch on, battery voltage should be present at BAT Terminal, and #1 & #2 terminals and ground. With ignition switch on, #1& #2 wire disconnected, battery voltage should be present at #1 terminal only and BAT terminal.
With all accessories turned on and engine running at 1500-2000 RPM, voltage at BAT terminal should be 12.8V or more. If reading is less, insert screwdriver into test hole (no more then 3/4 inch) and ground field winding. If voltage does not increase significantly, alternator is defective. If voltage increases 13v (~25v) regulator is defective.
Hope this helps
Initial impression is that your base engine idle is too low. If you haven't tuned her up in awhile, now would be a good time. This will include an idle/carb adj.
