What year is your vette? If I can find my book I'll try and track it down. :chevy :auto:

the 38501 produced (out of 53807). The number 4 in the fifth place indicates a 350ci 225 hp engine (L-82). If it were the base (195hp) engine the fifthe digit would have been an 8.

Good deal. I wish there was some way of know how many owners and what the history was on the car. Is there any other source than carfax? I know they dont go past 1981.

You should also check the number stamped on the engine block (its on a pad just ahead of the passenger side valve cover). That number should include the production number from the VIN.

I have the old engine. It died when bubba rebuit it before I had the car. When we disassembled the engine, there were 3 bolts in the main two of which were tight. So the original block is toast. I am keeping it for a keepsake I guess. There were so many of these car made, I guess it doesnt really matter.

You can try requesting info from your state DMV, but I think someone mentioned the other day that AL has privacy laws restricting this....

If you can find out from past owners if the car was ever registered in another state, you could try that state.
