Default How do you date a carb?

Yeah, yeah, I know--buy it flowers and tell it it's pretty.:D

I've been trying to find a correct qjet for my '69 L-36 with an October '68 build date. I looked at a carb today that had these numbers on the vertical "stamp" area on the rear driver's side of the body: 7029215 EH. No other numbers on the body. Along the driver's side edge of the base is the number 1508.

I've spent a lot of time searching the NCRS archives and the archives here and can't come up with an explanation for the letters after the carb number, though a couple of posts seemed to suggest they had something to do with the date. Elsewhere I found suggestions that there should be a four digit date code after the carb number on the same part of the body, but there doesn't seem to be a number there on this carb.

Can anyone enlighten me? I'm tired of searching archives.

I dont know that anyone knows for sure. The NCRS Spec. Guide says that " a date of manufacture code is also belived to appear at the same location, but is yet to be deciphered" The is an old book, some more information may be out by know. The number on the base could be the date? 150 th. day of 68?

JB, I agree with Wombvette. Looks like the 150th day of 1968, so May 29, 1968. According to the 68-69 NCRS judging guide, at least. My '69 Stingray Guidbook is on loan, so I couldn't check it for a second opinion.

Thanks, Guys. Shannon, I've got the Guidebook, and Bizzoco only has one picture, of a carb built in late '69 for a '70 smallblock, and it seems to show on that particular carb the date code following the carb # and the two letters. Bizzoco doesn't say anything about numbers on the base, and all he says about the letters is that they "most likely" have to do with the jet sizes. On the NCRS board archives, I kept finding posts that mentioned things like "JO" date code on a carb, but didn't explain what the heck that meant.

According to Alan Colvin"s "Chevrolet by The Numbers" 7029215 EH is a carb off a 69 427/390hp manual trans. The other 4 digit # is in fact a date code....the first 3 #'s are the day, the last # the year or in this case the 150 day in 1968. This would work out to be the next to last day in May 1968. BTW the location you found this code is correct. The two letters designate the code chevrolet assigned to that carb.
Looks like you found a correct carb with an acceptable date.....

I really never figured out those two letters either. I did find them referenced as "broadcast codes", whatever those are. Are you going to by it?

Yup, already did. It's sitting on my workbench as we speak. I'll probably send it along to Lars to get it set up.

JB,

Here is a great link for all things carb related. Just ignore the BUICK titles and keep telling all the bad people to go away. http://www.buickpartsdirectory.com/carbs.htm

On this page there is a link to RECARBCO which tells you what all the numbers mean: http://www.recarbco.com/technical/rochester/qjet.html
and also Blake Investments: http://www.blake.com/oemcarbs/partlist.htm

Good luck.
