I read a thread about a week ago that stated some of you are running 100amp (some 140amp) alternators vs the stock 64amp. My alternator just took a dive (blame this on the fact I just read the thread) :lolg:
Before I spend $37 at Autozone or $110 to get mine rebuilt to 100amp.
I am curious on what the advantage would be.
NO Air, no power locks or windows. Mounted flex fan...
The extra 36 amp capacity will come in handy of you have plans to put in a big stereo, fancy lighting, power locks & windows, etc. If you dont plan on installing additional electrical things like this there isn't any advantage to having an alternator with additional current capaicty, except that you have the additional capacity if you ever change your mind.
On the other hand there isn't any disadvantage to having a larger capaity alternator except the extra $70 price tag.
If you're not going to use the extra capacity, then don't buy it. If you even have remote thoughts of adding electrical accessories, then no regrets, buy it!
It doesn't take much to 'outstep' the stock amp rating, the numbers add-up fast. :yesnod: :chevy
I'd jump up to at least 100 amps because its very easy to overload the stock alternator. I went through 6 Advanced Auto alts with 3 years because I've got a stereo system, auxilary electric fan, power windows, etc. And its really embarassing having to jump your vette in front of people.
