I've asked the same question -- as you may know I have a hood for sale here and on ebay even as we speak.

here's a quick excerpt:
the extreme measurements shall not exceed:
24"X53"X74"
my 77 hood - as I measure is
6"X45'X63"
there will be an $8.00 over size charge
I'll know if this works if I sell my hood.

Things that big can be hard, the Grayhound idea is pritty good.
UPS can ship it, but only thru there freight department, min $150.00.
Research it well, other companines ship as well but there all abought the same lots of $$$$

Ups would charge you a Dimensional weight of 165. And it's not worth it. After packaging enough to safely hold that hood, it would be more like 170. go Freight service.

Shipping is sometimes rated by the type product being shipped, so if you call it a hood you'll likely pay extra. I used Overnight Freight when I shipped one to Texas and called it a fiberglass engine cover.
Kentucky to Texas:
Roadway wanted $328 dock to dock
ABF wanted $168
Overnight was $69 and a kiss to the lady friend that handled it. If you're real ugly, it might cost more. :D
