Oil filter numbers changed???
I have been looking for Mobil 1 oil filters for a couple weeks now. I normally buy the M1-202. I couldn't find that one, so I looked for AC Delco PF25. Well, after several trips to the store, looking for other stuff, and not finding these, I tried another store. I asked the guy if they carried these, and he said no. I made a smart comment about not carrying filters for the "uncommon" Chevy V8, and then we looked in the computer. It turns out all the numbers have been changed. When we pulled the filter the computer said, M1-111 and PF454, they were shorter than the old M1-202 and PF35!!! The last thing I want is less filtering media.
So, what number filter are you guys using now? I don't want to use a smaller filter, but of course the books at the store don't cross reference to larger filters.
Anybody know why they did this? Heard anything on the net or in magazines?
Thanks
Ken

GM phased out the PF-25 because the PF-454 fits "more" applications :mad
It was a "cost cutting" decision, you know :mad

I went through the same thing at Advance Auto Parts. The guy told me that there were to many filters that could be interchanged so they consolidated a bunch of them and stopped making others and changed some numbers. Just when I was getting to know all the filters that I use by heart. :nonod:
I am not sure if this is why or just a good story they told me. I also had to switch filters on my wifes Alero. :banghead:

It sure seems strange to me that multiple manufacturers did this at the same time. If they made them smaller, that must mean there was a car with less clearance, and they weren't making enough of them to justify production.
Anyway, I still want to find a filter that's bigger than the new choices.
Did you guys just end up buying the Pf454 or M1-111?

I can still get the AC Delco PF 35, which is a higher capacity version of the PF 25. Holds about another half pint of oil. It's not listed for the passenger car SBC, but you'll find it listed for some heavy duty applications, trucks and such, that use the SBC engine.

Guess I'll be changing brands to something else. There's a good thread around the Forum on oil filters - you might take a look at it.
BTW: Oil filters are now like candy bars - You pay the same but get less! That's what companies mean by "cost cutting".

The local AutoZone still has the PF35. Their on-line inventory shows it in stock today. Maybe I oughta go buy 'em all...
I knew that AC Delco had been spun off from GM for some time. Didn't know they went to the Frogs. So if a person has a vehicle, say a C20 truck with the 350 or 400 engine that calls for the long-style filter, that person is just SOL? I hate it when that happens. :mad

I have been using the K&N Performance Gold HP-2002. They are not exactly cheap, but I don't have to change the oil very often. :skep:

NAPA Gold filters (Wix) are available up to 2 quarts - if you can have that long a filter on (I can't) - and they are better filters anyway.
