Default Hood height

A few weeks ago I posted a topic on hood height. The question was what would cause the frount of a 71 corvette`s hood to be higher than the nose. There are no shims under the hood hinges. There has been some body work done to the nose, before i got it. Somebody on the fourm suggested the hinges were the cause. I priced them at $21.00 each, no biggee, but before I order. My question is: How can I check them out to tell if they are the cause or not. Would hate to order and install, just to have the same issue. Am I barking up the wrong tree? PS the hood is about 1/2" higher on the ends in frount. thanks :chevy

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but unfortunatly I have the same issue. I don't think new hinges will solve your problem but I'd like to know what would.

My 76 hood is higher than the fender by at least 1/4 inch only in the passenger side front corner. How could this be adjusted?

I guess I am not the only one with this alightment problem. Can bad bodywork and or panel replacement cause this. I can`t belive the only way to get these parts to fit right, whould be a complete replacement. Somebody out there has to have a fix?

Check the archives using Hood Height as the keywords. Found all sorts of good ideas. the one most interesting was the cutting and rewelding of the hood hinges. Does anybody know the member that did this? i gotta stop answering my own questions!

There are (or should be) shims at the latch area. adding shims there should bring the nose down.

one thing to check, speaking from experience with one of my 81s a couple of years back was that the front of the car had sagged, NOT the hood was too high.
do some careful measurements and maybe comparisons with another car before doing anything rash.
hope this helps.

From my past knowledge, I say check the height of the body all around and see if it matches the factory height if not adjust with shims under the body mounts and keep checking the height I have seen were the nose ties into the frame area pulled down causing this. The body moves up and down a lot.

If the hood is higher than the fenders and there are no shims under the the hinges, it indicates that the nose is sagging on the car. There is a bar bonded or riveted under the nose just inside the hood opening going from side to side. There is a bracket that supports this bar in each inner fender well and a support rod in the center of the bar going to the frame. Sometimes these loosen up or break and allow the front of the car to sag. I don't see how new hinges or changing body mounts will help at this time.

thanks Roadster, great looking 71, OK took a good look at nose last night. There is a few missing support parts there. The rod on the passenger side is not connected to anything. Also the small backets from the frame horns are not there. Looks like a bubba repair shop got there hands on it. If I replace all missing hardware, the nose is bonded to the fenders, how would the height change, without cutting the fiberglass. I was planning on painting it, but not right now. :chevy

The way its supposed to be done is when the front clip is located its supposed to be done with the hood on the car and located in relation to it. I would staighten out and replace the missing hardware first, push up the nose as far as you can, tighten up the bolts and see what you have got. Maybe this will be enough.

hate to raise the issue`s ugly head again. i found the part numbers and placement for the frame extensions outer brackets, but i can not find a good drawing in my shop manual or my build binder, for the connecting brackets. does any body have a supply or contact for the brackets mentioned by 71 roadster a couple of messages back, that tie in the header bar and the side fenders. Checked all my vendor catalogs also. No luck.
