Default STS baffle insertion

I just ordered a set of hooker headers-sidepipes from Jet-Hot. I will probably order a set of baffles from STS too. My question is do the baffles install before the sidepipes are slid over the header flange? Can they be installed and removed without taking the sidepipes off? Thanks for any info! :chevy

Please post a picture when you get the sidepipes on. I also have an 81 and would be interested in seeing the sidepipes.

What is the complete name? I just call the inserts by JCL's. If the same, I'm bad...

Here are some pictures I took while installing mine last year.

This shows the height of the car off of the garage floor

This picture shows how I alighned the baffles (different method, than the instructions provided with the baffles). I first located the front position to drill the hole for the attachment bolt so the bolt would slightly face the car from bottom dead center to "hide" it from view. I then attached the baffle to the pipe in front and eyed the back location until it was at the inflection point of the pipe and marked the drill spot. Drilled the second hole and then mounted the baffle on the inside and bolted everything together.

To slide the pipes onto the headers, I used a near 4 inch diameter polishing drill attachment to smooth out the inner diameter of the sidepipes, brushed on some copper anti-sieze onto the inside of the pipes and slid everything together before finally bolting everything to the car.

I spent a three day weekend on the project total from start to finish, taking several "thought" breaks along the way.

If I was to do it over, I would have sent the baffles to Jet-hot and had them Jet-Hot coated too.

Thanks for the replys and for the pics 74 vert. Do you really think I should have the baffles jet-hot coated also? Anyone run their baffles uncapped?

What material are the inserts? I'm going to order my inserts, drill the mounting holes, then send my sidepipes to Jet Hot (so that I don't have to drill thru the coating and create a spot for rust to start). Is it necessary (or at all beneficial) to have the baffles coated?

Here's a picture of my car with the sidepipes installed. I did not install them though, the previous owner put them on! :auto:
