Default How do you know.......?

LT1......L82.......etc.........Stingray? How do you know which you have? Are all Corvettes considered Stingrays?
I've had people ask me if mine is a LT1 or L82 and even if it is a Stingray. I didn't know what to say. Let me know what you think or how I can get the info. :auto:

Your 79 is either L48 (base engine) or L82, last Stingray was made in 1976, everything after that has been just corvettes!

79 only had an option of L48 or L82. Look at the 5th digit in your VIN. If 8 = L48. If 4= L82

Depends on who you ask. :D

As for me they are all Sharks and Stingrays. My dad installed "Stingray" emblems on our '68 about 20yrs ago, to some that might make me a "poser".

There ya go on that one!

Let's not get into the Stingray vs not stingray thing again! Puhleeze!! :jester:

In a nutshell:
'68 had no Stingray emblems but were advertised as "Sting Ray"
'69-76 had the Stingray script (as opposed to Sting Ray from the midyears)
'77+ had no Stingray script, but many people generically refer to all C3s as Stingrays. Others refer to 68-77 as Stingrays (being those without the fastback backlite).

You can call yours whatever you like! :yesnod:

30 HP.

L-82 - I believe it was a 4 bolt main instead of a 2 bolt main. Some other things that I can't remember. Different intake? Somebody help me out here.

So I take it that this subject has been discussed before. I always thought they all were Stingray's until a friend of mine said that after a certain year they were no longer considered "Stingray". I'm not really concerned about what's in a name.......I love the car............it could just as easily been called "Edsel" and I would still love it. I was even told mine was a "Shark".
So who out there in C3 forum land has a "Stingray" or a "Shark" or just a "CORVETTE"?

L-48:
2 bolt mains
cast crank
cast pistons
small valve heads
aluminum or iron intake (depending on year i believe)
wimpy cam
low compression
slightly more restrictive exhaust

L-82:
4 bolt mains
forged crank
forged pistons
aluminum intake
large valve heads
slightly higher compression
Slightly better cam
Slightly less restrictive exhaust

A good answer is that your car is a Shark, some C-3's were labled Stingray, some were labled Corvette but all C-3's are Sharks!

I would have thought that the '68-73's would be considered Sharks since they had the mako-shark rear and then from '74 on up as Pilot Whales with the lack of horsepower. :D

Do I have to spell it out? "Just kidding!"

This is from the C3 Vette Registry VIN decoder:

Your VIN Report: 1Z87898401649

Division (1): Chevrolet
Car Line (Z): Corvette
Body Style (87): Two-Door Coupe
Engine Type (8): L48-350ci,195hp
Model Year (9): 1979
Plant (8): not found
Sequence Number: 401649

The last 8 was not found. I know "S" was St. Louis, but I don't know much else. Maybe someone more knowledgable can chime in on that.

That is because the 8 should be the letter S :yesnod:
