That last 8 she has is supposed to be an S. All corvettes from '54 thru most of '81 came out of the St Louis Plant. "S" stood for St. Louis.
Then the 401649 stands for the 1649 corvette made that production year (1979). The 4 is just a extra number in there and the last 5 digits show order of production.
#1649 was made during the month of Sept. 1978. Probably early in the first week or second week.
Vettegirl, look on the drivers door pillar right around the top hinge of the door. Should be a tag riveted to the door post. On it will be a "stamped" letter and two number combination in the upper right corner of the tag. This is your Build Date. It should be a B01- B15 range of number combo. The B is for 2nd month of production (Sept.) and the 01 would be 1st day of month, 02 for 2nd day of the month, and so on.
Nope. My '75 is an auto and L-82. I think the people that ordered L-82 motor obviously want performance so 4-speed would more likely fit into that line of thinking.
Keep in mind that L-82 started in '73, right about the time Automatic trans. were gaining popularity. But L-82 was the only optional engine other that the L-48 after 74. Most that would order the HP engine wanted a 4-speed for the same reason.
My Convertible was ordered as a present to the original owners wife. She probably didn't want to deal with shifting while cruising around with the top down. I would guess convertibles got more autos than 4-speeds.
Some Corvette history is helpful to ID a Stingray.
In 63, the new smaller body & chassis w/ I.R.S. was called a Sting Ray. When the body was redone in 68 at first called Sting Ray & then used Stingray emblems in 69. Emblems are for identification & some can not identify w/o the emblem. Seems some place far more importance on emblems than the factory ever did. The factory wanted to change the new car so that it could be identified as new at the time. Stingray is not an option or emblem, some are unmarked.
Chassis essentially same from 63-77, body essentially same 68-77 & interior essentially same from 68-77.
There can be no question that 68-77 are Stingrays.
Can be debated on 78-82. Many changes. Note that the 78- rear glass is reminiscent of the 63-67 coupe.
O.K......Here's my V.I.N........1Z87898401649........
I can tell you that you copied the vin wrong :yesnod:
The 7th digit shoud be the letter S :yesnod:
OH MY.......WRONG? I got my title out and checked it. 1Z87898401649
Then I got my magnifying glass out to double check. 1Z87898401649
Unless it's a misprint on my title....those are the #'s.
well you have a 79 s otyou either have an L48 or an L82. There might be a small plate on the center console, that will say. If not check the vin, if the 4th or 5th number, i dont rmeber which, is a L then you have an L48, 180 hp, if not then you have a L82, i dont rember which number that would be. I belive this is how it was for 79 but im not completly sure on that. Also if you give the vin then someone here could probobly give you all the car specs including build date. Also check the engine vin, thos enumbers shoyuld be the same as the cars vin, but the cars vin witll ahve an extra 5 or 6 numbers.letters at the begginning of it. If they dont match that way than you dont have the orgional engine.

Have you compared that to the actual VIN on the vehicle? Typos are pretty common.

I'm going to check it just as soon as I get it back from the shop. I may even drive over Monday after work just to check it out. I need to check on the Vette any way. Wondering why it's taking so long to fix the e-brake and replace a U-joint.... :skep: I hope it's just a typo. It's got to be a typo...doesn't it?
I thought the only diff was the comp. ratio? 4 bolt in the 82 and 2 in the 48? Damn!
The differences I mentioned might vary from year to year - I wouldnt be surprised if the last year (80 or 81) had fewer differences..but others would have to chime in on that one.
I got a question on the L82's. Every L82 Ive seen has a 4spd. Did all L82's come with 4spd's?
L82s came available with virtually every trans option in any given year...with some exceptions. In 78 for example, you could get the close ratio 4 speed, the wide ratio 4 speed, or the only automatic available the TH350.
Most view the 4 speed cars as more desirable, and in fact they are susually the rarest...more automatic corvettes were produced in the C3 era than manuals...especially so in the later years.

Its a typo, very often those numbers are nearly illegible what with dirt, possible corrosion..etc.. and the 'S' looks one heck of a lot like an '8' without close scrutiny.
Unfortunately, those types of typos.... specifically the letter "S" showing up on a title as the number "8" are very common. Depending on the intelligence level of the people at your local DMV, it will either be an easy thing to change or a very difficult thing to change. Not to scare you, but there have been some real horror stories of people having their cars impounded because the vin on their title does not match the car's vin.. :(
Some useful data is available here: http://www.idavette.net/facts/79.htm
i would go to the DMV armed with a page like the one above, and/or a Black Book or some other reference that clearly shows the format of the 79 corvette vin.

There is a lot of useful info on the site. Thanks a lot. :)

Is this a serious enough matter to make the effort to correct it?
