Default Flowmasters ???

I am trying to find the proper Flowmasters for my '72 stock 350 four speed. I know some you have them on your cars and I am trying to figure out what, if any modifications to the exhaust system would need to be made if I put them on. Flowmaster tells me that the mufflers are 2.5" in diameter but my pipes measure 2.25" They say they will fit. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A good muffler shop should have no problem getting them to work. Get an h or x-pipe while you are at it, it will mellow the raspiness out of them and give you a little more hp and torq.

Or just run new pipe 2.5 is what I did with an H pipe and Flow 40's sounds awesome

I also have a pretty much stock 72. Weiand Stealth, Edeldrock 600 carb and Electronic ignition. Exhaust system is still using the Ram Horns and stock mufflers. I thought about Flowmasters, but thought they would give out to much interior noise. Have you looked at anything else?

The H or X pipe cures that problem nicely

I have dynomax headers, duels 2.50 pipes and flowmaster 40s. It sounds awesome and I can tell the car has more pepper to it now. Before I had the duels on it, between 1500 and 2000 rpms it was pretty loud in the car. It is better now, but it ain't quiet! :reddevil

My 72 has Flow Masters with 2.5" pipe. The muffler shop should have no problem adapting up .25" from your 2.25" pipes. As for the noise, the only time they get loud is when you get into the throttle HEAVY. Other than that they are quiet when cruising, not at all loud in the car, even with the back window out and the tops off.

I have 40's on my 1980 with true dual 2.5'' pipes and I couldn't be happier. :hurray: They have a nice tone going down the road and a nice growl when you jump on it :steering: :auto:

I just got a set of Flowmaster 50's Delta Flow installed on my 77 yesterday that fit in just fine. They sound powerful with lot's of bass. A little too much for the interior at 30 mph but real nice on the Hwy. I wanted to get a crossover but the exhaust pipes were higher than the oil pan, no room to run the crossover pipe unless it sat lower than the oil pan which would then bottom out I'm guessing. The 50's are the more popular mufflers for Vets as per the guy's at Mopac Performance.

Glenn
Using the 50 series delta flow. Same performance as the 40's with a milder tone. Flowmaster tech pros also strongly suggest using an H pipe whicjh I do not have, they say it increases torque and HP balances harmonics and cylinder pressure.

7vette2,
Have you looked at the Dynomax Super Turbos, a good chambered muffler with a mild tone and good performance.

I've got the Delta 50's with 2 1/4 inch pipes. Sounds good. The only load point, as someone else pointed out, is between 1500 and 2000 rpm. I've got a sound clip at my web site.

I had Flowmaster 50's on my 70 big block for about a week then I cut them off. They drove me crazy with a nasty vibrating drone at low RPM's. I installed an aluminized "off-road" exhaust system from Allen's. Not to take away from those happy with their Flowmasters, but I hated them.
