I have the steering wheel off my 1980. Who do you guys reccommend for exchange/restoration of original?

There are a ton of places who can do it. If you want to go cheap, you can buy a Grant steering wheel, brand new, from Summit. Or, you can go to MidAmerica or Ecklers, or Zip, Al Knoch, all these carry the wheels. Expect to spend around $260.

If the leather isn't torn, you may want to try re-finishing it yourself. Clean the wheel real well, then buy the matching vinyl dye. Finish coat it and let it dry. Take your time, it will look great.

Thanks for the advice. The leather is not too bad but the padding is shot and the stitching is a bit ratty. With almost everything else new in the interior I don't want to cut this corner and have less than the best. After all it's all for a 16 year old that I'm sure will fully appreciate his old man's attention to detail.

Let's hope he appreciates it half as much as the rest of us.

My son has just finished a complete 'rebuild' of my original steering wheel for his motor trimming tech course. He's in his final year of apprenticeship and has topped the class every year so far with every likelyhood of doing it again this year.
I now have a beautiful black leather bound and repadded 77 steering wheel in my collection of spare parts as I had already bought a new one when the old wheel became too grotty for the car.

I feel better. I was not sure why we shelter, clothe, feed, educate and entertain our kids for so long. So far all I got is a plaster mold of his hand that he did in the 2nd grade. It does look pretty good however.

Check out http://www.american-stitches.com

They did the one on my Buick T-Type, and I was very happy. Nice leather, and the stitching was correct.
