I just orderd the Hydraboost setup for my 71. Any tips on installing on a BB / 4speed with manual brakes? Is removing the steering column really required?
I was able to install it without removing the column on my 72 with manual brakes. You don't have to remove the studs. Just the two lower bolts and the nuts from the studs on the brake cylinder. The aluminum plate has bolts on the lower and the studs on the top.
I found it to be not such a bad job. I just took the steering wheel off and removed the seat. The bolts were easy.... but that darn clevis pin was enough to cause a saint to swear!! It was SO frustrating that I took a break right in the middle of it (installing the clevis pin) and drove to get an ice cream sundae. It made me feel much better :)
I have had the system now for about 600 miles, and I must say it is nothing short of amazing! The braking is almost supernatural. I can't imagine a car having better brakes. I REALLY want to drive a Porcshe 911 now to compare. I'd bet mine are almost as good.
I thought my Maxima had very good brakes, but now they feel mushy and almost scary compared to the Hydroboost system.
I had no trouble installing mine at all. Never had to touch the seat or the steering wheel/column, but then my car is RHD. :D
One thing you will need is a 9/16" deep socket to take the old nuts off with and a 15mm one if you choose to use the new ones that came with the unit. Plus when I spoke to Paul from Hydroboost, I asked about shorter studs as I had cut mine during a previous booster removal and he obligingly sent me a unit that had shorter studs already fitted tho whether they are a production item I don't know.
