Default Somebody please shoot me...

To those who have been following along with my pre-oil dilemma... I got the pre-oil shaft thing and started to do it. Everything was going fine until I looked under the car, and saw oil freely running off of the flywheel :mad I thought maybe it was the oil pan gasket and messed with that for a while, but it is not that. What else could be leaking oil other than around the crank? I am about ready to sell a 76 with a 383........ :cuss

Can you tell at all where it's coming from?

It looks like where the crank is coming out of the block... The oil is running down both sides of the flywheel. Should I be able to see part of the **shiny** part of the crank where it bolts on to the flywheel?

My guess would be the rear main seal. I don't believe anything else is back there. You have good reason to be :mad These things are not easy to do once everything is together. Sorry to hear about the problem

Was the rear main seal installed when the rebuild was done?

Where is your oil pressure sending unit(on the rear top deck of the block or down by the oil filter)? I assume you do have it hooked up or plugged? There's a small plug that needs to be installed right by the distributor in the block if it's not there. Then again you'd see oil pumping freely if it wasn't plugged.

What about the two little oil galley plugs in the back of the block? Maybe they were left out.

Not likely the rear main seal is leaking from just priming. The crankshaft has a deflector on it to keep oil from spraying directly on the seal and it's not under direct oil pressure but spray from the rear bearing. I think the seal would have been left out completely to have a large puddle from just priming.

More likely one of the 3 oil galley plugs or the cam journal plug just above the crank all under direct pressure.
If you go to the left aft head surface area on the block there is a plug there also that is sometimes left out and is a drilled oil port and last of all is the oil pressure port at the top of the block just to the left of the distributor. LOL

Get yourself a six pack,it sounds like the galley plugs in the block. The rear main shouldn't even be near oil unless you put like 2 gallons of oil in a 5 qt pan.

:iagree:

I doubt it would be the oil pressure guage fitting by the distributor, that would be quite obvious during the priming. - if it were the main seal it would be at teh very bottom of the crank and quite obvious - and like mentioned since there is a splash shield it would have to be a puddle of oil rising up to the seal location.

Arent you glad you found this out now by pre-oiling rather that firing it up and having no - oil pressure at all and pumping your whole crankcase onto the ground?

My friend had the same thing happen to his. There are three pipe plugs in the back up around the cam area. One of his plugs cracked the casting when the engine shop installed them. It didn't look like much but it was enough to leak like a sive when he primed the engine. We ended up pulling the motor back out and tapping the hole deeper to get the plug to seal again.
