I will begin to kick some tires on a couple of cars this weekend. I obviously want a solid, rust free car. Where do i look on these years to find rust? Are the common areas easily visable? Any other tips on what to look for?
The worst place for rust on C3s is the rear frame rail just in front of the kickups. You can access and view the area fairly well without one but I would suggest a lift inspection of any car you're serious about. Most rust starts from within so I suggest probing with a small screwdriver or pick to test the integrity/real thickness of the area.
I just replaced both rails on my car. You can see some before & after pics here:

Check the windshield frame. You might have to look carefully around the stainless steel trim. Also, another trick is to get in the car then close the doors firmly and listen for rust particles falling down behind the footwell trim.
Check the rocker channels and windshield frame as well as the frame. To do this you will need to remove the sillplates and front kick panels and look inside for rust. The rocker channels are what support the body off the frame.
