It's used to smack the end of the rivet to flare and roll it. The rivet has a large solid shoulder, where the bushings are used, and the tip that attaches the links together is smaller and hollow.
very nice work, i'll be looking forward to doing that on my 69 here pretty soon. i'll probably powder coat my parts, but its costly and takes time...what type of paint did you use?
Eddie 70 - Rented the tool from Paragon Reproductions. $15 for 10 days.
427V8 - There are seven on each end and four for the middle support bracket (that's the one that started all this...part of that bracket was broken and I found a used assembly).
Redshark - I just used gray primer and black satin enamel and will clear coat everything to add some durability.
(Tidbit) There's no way to get the support brackets off the main rod unless you grind the welds off the ends, so if you ever break a bracket, it's pretty much over... I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has done it and got the end link realigned properly. It would be nice to have been able to replace the three rod bushings as well, but I didn't even see those as being available (I would have just slit it and slipped it around the rod - once the brackets are on them, they wouldn't come off).
