Side Pipe Covers (Revisited)
All along I have been planning to buy the fiberglass covers sold by Ecklers next weekend. I primarily had planned to get these because of the price - $299.99.
The polished factory reproduction covers look so fantastic - $2299.99.
I have not spared any expense on my car to this point. Guess I would have to be crazy to spend $2299.99.

Especially if the fiberglass ones are the ones that look factory and you can just send them out to get JetCoated to look like polished factory ones. :eek:

Are you sure the covers cost $2300? I thought that was the price for the whole kit, pipes, covers, brackets etc.
Anyway, while the originals do look good, 1969 was the only year they were offered by the factory, so you might want to consider that.

OK i just searched and found nothing about Jet Hot coatings on fiberglass, I believe I was mistaken. Sorry for the confusion :banghead: :banghead:
And 2 grand for sidepipe covers is RIDICULOUS at best, you could get 2 FULL exhaust systems for that

I have been looking around just out of curiosity and the ONLY other place I saw the covers were $1950.00 http://www.cranescorvette.com/corvette_side_exhaust.htm

I have checked a few places, but no luck. I probably won't know what to do until the last moment. I agee the Hookers are cheaper, but I already have headers. Just do not want to redo the header thingy which is a real pain.

I honestly want to know what makes these covers so damned expensive!?!? I mean really! all they are are molded aluminum!!
Must be nice to charge 20 times what it costs to make those things. Granted they look friggin SWEEEEEEEET but geez. :crazy:

Not defending the price, BUT, there's a lot of work that goes into making them.
First of all you have the left and right fiberglass/metal insulators that need to be reproduced.
Then, you have 5 separate aluminum castings to be made, lt. front, rt. front, lt. rear, rt. rear, and the "middle piece". THEN, you get to chrome plate all 6 pieces over the aluminum/pot metal, which is a difficult process. There are very few chrome plating companies that will even attempt to re-chrome original covers. Chuck

My .02, get the factory covers. I also get the feeling you will question yourself if you settle for something other than what you really want. You have spared no expense at this point as you mentioned so why start with something that you and everyone else will see on a regular basis.
