What would be a good muffler for a 78, that is quiet yet flows well?
It doesn't have to be completely quiet, like at WOT, but just cruising I'd like for the car to be quiet. The stock mufflers make a lot of noise, and the drone gets tiring very quickly on trips.
Also, I don't want to restrict hp. I need mufflers that will allow a 400hp engine to breathe freely.
I know this is asking a lot of a muffler, but I think there are a few out there that would work: Borla, Edelbrock, DynoMax Ultras.
I assume these type mufflers will be larger; will the size of them be an issue?
I've had flowmasters in the past, and they were ok. But, it seems like everyone has them these days, so I would like someting different for a different sound.
BTW, I'm adding an X-pipe with the install, so that should help a little with the noise.
Keep in mine, what ever muffler system you decide to go with there are no tail pipes so there will always be some sound coming out of them.
I run Flowmaster Delta Flow 50's, load at low end, reasonable on the hwy.
They are 4" thick x 9 3/4" wide x 19" long and fit perfect. I would not go with any muffler that is longer than 19" (case ) as there is not much more room under there. If I knew how to add pictures I would show you how mine fit in.
I have used Borla on my car over the past year or so. The sound is sorta in the middle range. I think it is a good choice for an under the car muffler.
I am going to side pipes in the next couple of weeks. :)
You want a 400hp engine to be quiet? The only thing I know that comes close is a new Z06. Are you getting 400hp from a small block without headers?

I forgot to mention that I am running headers - Dynomax CeramaCoat.
I don't expect the car to be so quiet that you can hear a pin drop; I know it's going to make some noise. I just want less than it makes now. Currently I rattle the neighborhood when I leave out in the mornings
Perhaps part of my problem is that the baffles in the stock mufflers are about gone. Maybe any decent muffler would be quieter. What I need to do is go to the muffler shop and see if they have any V-8 cars there that I could listen to. Maybe that would help.
I would have first suggested stock mufflers as the best combo. Your 78 would have had a catalytic converter. I believe such cars used less restrictive mufflers. Your muffler is probably either worn out, or perhaps noisier if you have removed the cat. If you have removed the cat, try using a factory muffler spec'd for a pre-cat car.
I have stock mufflers on the 74...i'm pumping about 375 hp w/stock mufflers...not very quiet at all...in fact, people ask me all the time if i chambered exhaust or flowmasters?

Something doesn't sound right, pun intended. I have driven these cars when new. They sounded authoritive, but nothing like Flowmasters or even turbo mufflers. Road & Track made sound measurements of these cars, they compare very closely to the interior noise C5's make.
I have Flowmaster 50s with an X pipe and the drone at 1700 rpms is horrible! With the overdrive transmission am at 1700 a lot of the time... I need something quiet.
on my 81 when i first got my dual exhaust put on, i had dynomax mufflers. they were way to quiet. they did open up pretty good at about 2800 rpm and up tho. even the idle was quiet  i hated them. so i put on KBD's and love em. they're very loud and aggressive :reddevil

I have the walkers. Good news is no drone whatsoever. Sound is a little on the boring side though. I tried the flow 50's. I loved the idle sound, but like you I couldn't stand the drone.
i forgot to mention i have them on my 86 also :yesnod: i have sound files of it if anyone is interested altho the two cars sound totally different. the 81 has dual exhaust while the 86 has the factory exhuast without the cats :smash:
