Timing chain cover replacement.
I'm almost to the point of removing the timing chain cover which came about as a matter of course while I was down there replacing first just the harmonic balancer then the timing gears with PJ gear drive. I was just wondering if the sump has to come off as well as the timing chain cover. It's no big deal "while I'm at it", but I was just curious whether is was necessary.

If by sump, you mean the oil pan, then yes, it is best to remove it and replace the gaskets. Many times we short cut this by just lowering the front of the pan a little and using a good amount of silicone sealer. That will usually work just fine.
