I KNOW THIS IS A FREQUENT TOPIC, BUT WHAT OIL PUMP ARE MOST OF YOU USING IN YOUR SMALL BLOCK? I BOUGHT A MELLING M55HV THAT I THOUGHT TO BE HIGH VOLUME ONLY. TURNS OUT IT'S A HIGH VOLUME/HIGH PRESSURE. WILL THIS PUMP WORK? WILL IT HURT ANYTHING TO HAVE HIGH PRESSURE? IS IT TOO MUCH PRESSURE? I HAVE BOUGHT THESE IN THE PAST, BUT I DONT RECALL THEM BEING HIGH PRESSURE. MY ENGINE WILL HAVE A FLAT TAPPET HYDRAULIC CAM IF THAT MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE.
Hey man, no need to YELL! Chill on the caps lock key, it makes your post hard on the eyes.
Depends on what you want to do with the motor. Street smallblocks are fine with just a standard volume standard pressure pump. If you're going to build a race motor with loose clearances and want to spend extended time above 6000 rpm, go high volume high pressure. Contrary to what Summit would like for you to believe, not everything that works on a NASCAR car is well suited to a street car. :D
I am running the Moroso Blueprinted High Volume pump without issue. 40lbs at idle, ~80lbs at cruise. Somewhat over 80lbs at WOT(5000+rpm). My clearances are on the loose side, so in my case its neccesary. That pump won't "hurt" anything, but it will use more power than a std volume pump.
My main clearances are .0035" BTW.
Might want to wait for details from someone in the know that has info on running a hv/hp pump with hyd lifters, seems I have heard/read it can cause problems at high rpm's.
