hi guys. have just ordered some heads and a cam. bout ready to get some headers. read several posts about dynomax coated headers. question. how good is the fit?? pita factor?? how is spark plug access. have a gmpp mini starter already, so shouldnt heat soak. any tips on what to/not to do?? car is a 77 with a th350. thanks for any input. regards, fng
The fit is pretty good. The only issue I have with them is both the Header collector and the Reducer have a movable triangle pieces. I was expecting one of them to be a fixed piece and one movable. I think that has caused some of my sealing issues.
Fit is good and easy, as long as you get the car high enough to get underneath easily. They tell you to go from the bottom, so do that, don't try from the top, it make look easy to go from the top, but its much easier from the bottom. ( I know from experience!!!)
The coller on the reducer is too thin IMO, it bent when tightened. I used 2 gaskets and got them to seal pretty well. I tried earl's insert types but they did not work nearly as well as they did for the head exhaust gaskets.
I used Percy's aluminum gaskets all through out the install. I had trouble with the metal bending line fevre said. I tightented the collector to reducer, but all that is happening is the metal is bending it is not sealing that well. I may try to gaskets to see what happens.
It is an Earl's, they have replacable inserts if they get totally trashed for about $25. One thing though you have to be careful putting the insert in or it can fold at the thin spots. I bought replacement inserts when I changed eng and was going to switch them all out but folded one when putting it in so I reused an old one, sealed right up. I bought them from Summit, link below to page: http://store.summitracing.com/search...arl%27s+header
First ones I bought with the alum retainers came uncut so I had to cut the inserts to fit my exh ports, a little pain in the ars for a mild build up but if you where racing it would be good to match the gasket to the port. Second set I went with the pre-cut 1.5 x 1.5 to save some time. There are a few diff port sizes to choose from.
I wish I could say my experience with these headers has been as good as everyone else. The install was not a problem. My issue is with sealing. I have never been able to get them to seal well. I have used dead soft copper gaskets to no avail. I have stage 8 locking fasteners also. To boot, the bottom section on the driver's side is starting to show rust thru the ceramic coating. Next time, I'm going with a higher quality header with a thicker flange. I had to cut the passenger side flange with a hacksaw to relieve the warped flange.
well , thanks again fellas. maybe i should go with hookers?? dont want any problems and really only want to do this once. may pony up for some better ones. any input here??
