Driving home i started hearing a strange noise so i slow down and get out to find that i have broken all my rear passenger lug nut studs but one. When i tryed to roll to the side of the road the last one broke. Can someone please tell me how to get the rotor off and replace the studs???
Getting the rotor off is easy-replacing the studs requires removal of the spindle. There is a good chance that you did some bearing damage, so While you have the spindle out, I'd rebuild the bearing assemblies.
I have figured out I need to drill out the rivets that hold on the rotor but now how do I pull the spindle? I have managed to get the car out of the road using a large floor jack but it’s still not in the best place. Thanks
You aren't going to be doing this on the side of the road. It isn't as simple as just getting the spindle out and putting in new studs. The bearings have to be shimmed when you reassemble it. You need either a spindle knocker or a press. I would suggest that you get the car towed home and remove the bearing assembly as a unit-which includes the spindle. You can either buy the tools to do it or have the assemblies sent out to have a pro do it.
By the way-This is a good time to add longer studs. Most aftermarket wheels have thicker mounting flanges and consequently there isn't much thread to mount the lug nuts to.
I really don’t know how the car can be towed with out the rear wheel any suggestions would be helpful. Also I have read on the forum that others have replaced the studs with out removing the spindle is this feasible to get the car home?
If you've sheared studs, I imagine some other damage has been done. I would bet money that even if you were able to get new studs on there without disassembling anything, it wouldn't last very long. You can try it to get the car home. The tow truck can tow it from the rear. He'll put a dolly on the front.

The car shouldn't be towed, it must be on a flat bed.
after spending a long time drilling through the rotor (Why did GM do that :banghead: ) I finally got the rotor off and removed the parking brake components. My vette is an 81 so im not sure this will apply to all, but on the passenger side at roughly the 1 o'clock position i was able to hit the back plate a few times to dent it in enough to get in a full stud then rotate the hub to get the rest in. Now that i got the vette home i guess i can get started on the rest. Does everyone really feel the parking brake is a lost cause? Thanks again for the help!!!!!!!!
What I kind of meant was I have heard several other members say that they dont have the parking brake epuip. anymore and if they do it never realy works anyway. One thing that im not sure about is that I was not required to remove the spindle, although it feels solid with no play I did have to beat on the rotor a good amount. I'm trying to stay on a very limited budget, so whats everyones suggestions on if i should do anything concerning the spindle and bearings.
I know it would be a great thought to believe it was due to torque but I doubt that’s the case so I believe its is one of two things or a combo of both
1.Some time ago I hit a curb on that same side, plus from the looks of my stock rims that was not the first curb. :nonod:
2.I recently replace my rims and when I did I could have possibly under tightened that wheel.:banghead:
Any other thoughts would be great because your right I am now not very comfortable driving the car as I was before.
