HELP! I've just replaced my oil pan and pump along with the intake, carb and distributor and now my engine stalls every couple minutes. It starts right back up with no problem but always stalls again. There's also smoke coming from inside the engine but the temp guage doesn't read over 180degrees. Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea what it could be?
Welcome to the Forum!
I think we need more info to help.
What model year and motor do you have?
Do you have oil Pressure? Do you have an electronic sender or a line to the gauge?
If electronic, is the sender connected?
Is the sender wire caught between any of the new components and the block?
Are the lifters rattling?
Were the Carb, intake and Distributor new or second hand?
Is the PCV valve working correctly?
How many miles does the engine have on it?
Answers to these questions will give us a good starting point.
Good Luck!
James
Thanks!
ok, it's a '75 350ci. with around 75,000 miles. I can't tell if i have oil pressure. the guage works but is not reading any. I'm not sure if the sending unit works. how can i test that? It is connected and not bound up anywhere.
All the parts are brand new and high performance and there's no PCV valve. I adjusted the valve lash so the lifters are no longer rattling. It runs smooth and starts up with no objections even immediately after it cuts off.
Hook your PCV back up and you will eliminate the smoke under the hood. Stalling is probably a carb adj issue no biggie but the no oil pressure reading is. Did you remember to put the oil pump rod in? Sorry if a stupid question but needs to be asked.
If the oil pressure gauge worked before(or not),I'd pull a valve cover and look to see if you have oil squirting out of the pushrods when the engine is running,or pull the oil pressure sender and turn over the engine with the distributer hot wire disconnected.(So it will not start.) You should see a stream of oil squirt out. I'm guessing the oil pump drive shaft isn't seated properly in the distributer, and that's why you have no pressure.I hope the engine is still OK after running with no pressure.
