I've been fighting with the right rear upper shock bolt for 2 hrs and can't get the thing off. I tried PB, tried liquid wrench, tried a breaker bar, tried hammering the breaker bar.
The left right was tough too.....but nothing like this. :banghead:
Mine took a torch,2lb mallet and about 12 beers in 8 hours.I only used a propane torch,so it really didn't get the bolt as hot as I'd have liked. :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:
My mistake,I thaught I read lower shock bolts. The top bolts came right out.
My thinking was to heat the mount to expand the metal and then drive the bolt out with the shock removing tool. Not sure what finally worked. The repeated heating, hammering with the mallet,or the beer.I worked seriously 8 hours on one bolt, and had to replace the shock bolt with a new one anyway. The other side took half the time to change.
I've seen muffler shops heat the manifold flange cherry red to get the stud out without breaking it.That was what gave me the idea.
I used a torch on that top bolt and got the nut off from the back, but I still cant get that bolt out! It spins, but won't pull out. There is nothing holding it in the back now. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it's stuck in the rubber bushing. Can you see if the bushing is spinning too? I haven't changed the shocks on my vette in quite awhile so I don't remember how tough it is to get at the mount. You might be able to cut the bushing with a knife, but I'm not sure. Can you hammer the bolt out? Again, I don't remember how much access you have to that area.
There's a steel sleeve in the bushing. That sleeve is about 1 inch or so long. The bolt is likely rusted to the bushing throughout its' length. You might have to cut the bolt....both sides....within the "U" that holds the shock. NOT a fun job. Chuck
